Raise – best practice - Penybryn Penybryn Springboard Maths

Springboard is a catch-up programme for children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 7. The materials focus on key areas of number. They provide additional tuition for small groups of children outside the daily mathematics lesson (DML) during the weeks when these areas are being taught in the DML.

Social and personal skills

  • Determine need

  • Visit the Infant school  - discussion about the expectations of the Foundation Stage.

  • Meeting staff - ask about social expectations and personal skills of children reached by year three.

  • Establish a letter / questionnaire, and send to parents / guardian (specifically within the target group).

  • From the information that has been collected, plan tasks to meet the needs -  year teacher and teaching assistant  working together.

  • Identify target groups to work with them on specific tasks.

Reading Diary

Offering extra assistance to help improve your children’s reading skills.

It is of great importance that the work is encouraged by parents, reviewing the work your child does in school by:

  1. listening to him/her re-reading the pages

  2. putting   or o beside the words that have been written whilst reading the text

  3. Putting   or o beside the spelling words- practice spelling in the homework book or on a piece of scrap paper.

There is no need to read ahead, only reviewing. This should take 10 minutes.

It is imperative that this takes place every night and that the book and the diary are returned to the school every day.

  • Teaching Assistant is responsible, the children have their choice of target group and whole school data show needs.

  • Emphasis is placed on  home links : a register by the assistant to monitor who is bringing their  books to school daily.

  • Reward / praise the support from home.
