Suzanne Wall- Dowlais Primary School

We changed our topic regularly as we did not want to exclude any children who had not attended the previous weeks’ session.

In order to encourage good practice at home and in school we promoted and rewarded good behaviour at all times. Children who displayed good behaviour were rewarded with stickers and praised, Children who were not as pro-active with good behaviour were regularly reminded and encouraged to behave accordingly and rewarded and praised when they displayed good behaviour. The Nursery teacher has commented on the children’s behaviour, and she believes that this is a direct result of good practice from LAP/NAP.

During the observation our topic was Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, as we felt this story had enough scope for a successful language and Maths session.  We gave the children resource packs for the parents to use at home with their children, to encourage parents to complete home-school tasks. Tasks were given every other week and then work was put on display. Early home school tasks, encourage children to have a good attitude towards future homework; and is an excellent opportunity for children and parents to spend quality time together.

Language

During our language sessions we promoted listening to stories and singing rhymes. The children would all listen to big book stories with one group leader, whilst the other group leader would inform parents of the afternoons’ activities, the benefits the children would receive and the importance of encouraging the same good practice at home.

Numeracy

During our Numeracy sessions we encouraged the children to participate in practical activities. We aimed to develop the children’s understanding of order and size, and encouraged the children to use positional language using the 3 bears, bowls and spoons.

Music and Creative Development

We encouraged the parents and children to sing ‘When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears’ together on the mat. We explained to the parents that singing with your child encourages confidence and self-esteem. The children enjoyed this activity and often asked to sing the song again in the following sessions.

Fine Motor and Creative Development

We explained to the children that we wanted to make a big picture and needed everybody to help. Each child participated in the activity with their parent’. The children had the opportunity to use a variety of textured and coloured materials e.g. coloured card, paint, paper, felt, glitter and wool. We encouraged parents to ask their children relevant questions about Goldilocks and to allow them to make independent choices.

The following week the children were delighted to see their work on display. We explained to the parents how important it is to encourage a child’s creativity and how children love seeing their work on display - even if it is only on the fridge at home!

Personal and Social Development

Every session we gave the children a different themed box and allowed them to explore and immerse themselves in creative and imaginative play, encouraging them to retell the story of Goldilocks. We explained to the parents the importance of encouraging good quality play and allowing children the opportunity to explore and develop their creativity. We advised the parents not to become too involved in the children’s play as they needed some time and space to explore and learn independently.
